Discussions around EU strategic autonomy and defence capabilities have intensified following the fall of Afghanistan, despite transatlantic relations returning to a familiar tone following the election of the new US administration. While we have seen calls for various forms of strategic autonomy and a European Army from European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Charles Michel, we are still at an embryonic stage regarding what many agree will be key piece of the European project.
About the event
This event will focus on the prospects of a stronger Common Foreign and Security Policy and European defence cooperation, exploring the current realities within both domains, and giving us a glimpse into ongoing discussions and the possibilities for where we could see the European Union develop its competencies. The Conference on the Future of Europe is a fine political opportunity for necessary reforms that will usher a new era for the EU. The Liberal White Book 2030 is ELF’s comprehensive proposal for EU policies on institutional decision-making and foreign policy. This event will discuss these proposals in the context of the Conference.
