The COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions and the climate crisis have exacerbated mental health challenges across Europe. Young people have been particularly impacted by digital pressures, social media, and economic challenges, leading to increasing rates of loneliness, anxiety, and performance-related stress. Addressing mental health is essential not only for helping individuals but also for maintaining strong, equitable institutions and fostering a healthy, engaged and open society.

ELF’s and Projekt:Polska’s study Fundamental Mental Health, addresses the escalating mental health crisis in Europe, exacerbated by factors like the COVID-19 pandemic, social inequalities, and rising populism. It explores the links between mental health and liberal values, emphasizing the need for systemic, inclusive approaches across health systems, education, and social policies. The publication features insights on youth mental health, early childhood intervention, and mental health literacy alongside practical policy recommendations. It advocates for mental health as a cornerstone of healthy, democratic societies, calling for innovative solutions, increased funding, and cross-sector collaboration
