In this paper, Prof. Carl B. Hamilton, Special Advisor to EU Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, reflects on the EU-US trade relation after the 2016 American Presidential election.
He argues that American trade policy has been dominated since the 1940s by a liberal and market-oriented mindset. However, after the 2016 American presidential election, it seems President Trump advocates for a return to the protectionism and isolationism.
Prof. Hamilton concludes that, for the European Union to take up a global leadership role, it should pursue trade, defence and military policies more independently of the US. This will probably lead to increasing levels of public spending on these policy areas, primarily on defence.
