Smart Parliaments: Data-Driven Democracy

‘The future is faster than we think, it is time to reboot Europe’s operating system’

The Techno-Politics vs Europe Forum took place on 17 November 2022 in Brussels, created not only to launch Volume 4 of the ELF Techno-Politics Series, but to use the studies as a basis for important discussions on how new and future technologies can influence traditional ‘policymaking’.

In alignment with the Smart Parliaments study we hosted a discussion panel, chaired by Series editor Professor George Mikros, looking at the EU’s democratic procedure and how we can use technology to create more efficient and resilient institutions. While new and forthcoming technologies influence how the world functions, the application of specific tools to handle democratic procedures will shape the way politics is done

Nandor Tamas Toth, CPO, Co-Founder at STATELESS,  Miklós András Danka, CPO, Co-Founder at STATELESS, Francesco Grillo, Managing Director Vision Think Tank and Jordan Maris, Parliamentary Assistant formed the panel, providing their perspectives on the topic.

George Mikros, opened the session with a presentation, discussing innovation of our democratic procedures focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and the power it can provide to underrepresented groups. Jordan Maris, Parliamentary Assistant then provided his insights on the challenges within the EU in advancing the digitalisation of the institutions.

All is not well in the European Parliament. There are so many simple things we need to get right before we look at more complex digitalisation‘.

Nandor Tamas Toth and Miklós András Danka from Stateless Media introduced the forum to the Online Voting Concept, outlining down the benefits of this new technology, such as creating the ability to vote remotely, facilitating high participation, but also how we can and must avoid the potential risks, ensuring there is not a trade off with security.

Overall, the session was very useful in introducing the new innovation strategies, aligned with the focus of the new study, towards elevating the resilience of our parliamentary democracy and the overarching future of the European project. While new and forthcoming technologies influence how the world functions, the application of specific tools to handle democratic procedures will shape the way politics is done.
