In both past and present times, LGBTI advocates have hardly found allies among institutionalised religions. All around the world, we find multiple instances of religiously inspired prejudices, hatred, and violence towards homosexuals, coming from different cultures and religions. At the same time, far from such violent views, religious beliefs may also constitute a progressive force, and in the eyes of many LGBTI people, religion can be a key element in the shaping of their identity.
The complex relationship between LGBTI rights and religions should therefore be discussed openly and frankly, in both its positive and negative outcomes. In this effort, this paper reviews religious and sexual identities and analyses a religion’s place in a liberal society.
